Functionality in Interior Design

November 28th, 2011

When you are looking to start an interior design project for your next room, you will want to make sure that you do not get so carried away with your design project that you make the room uncomfortable and uninhabitable. It is easy to get excited about all of the great finds that you are making and end up purchasing them all. This can lead to be a disaster because the room could end up being so crowded that a person may end up feeling overwhelmed in it. If walking across the room means that you have to make a few twists and turns, you should realize that you have gone overboard.

Functionality is important with interior design because it will give you the ability to make sure that a room is still open and welcoming. It means that everyone will be able to interact within your room, whether it be sitting on furniture and holding a discussion or mingling around, perhaps with a party.

Your future group may wish to all play a game together and you will need room to accommodate this. Functionality means that not only is there enough space for everyone to sit around but enough room for those same people to all stand and interact with each other as well.

This will largely relate to the amount of furniture that you put into a room. Between sofas, armchairs, and just casual seating, you will want to have enough seating in a room to fit a fair amount of people. At the same time, a good rule of thumb would be to have a table for every chair. People always like to have something to drink with them and providing enough space for every chair to have a table to rest a drink on can be important.

Functionality expands to more than just furniture, however. Lighting is another important quality that you will need to allow for when interior designing.

If the room does not have enough light for everyone to see what is going on, it will be much harder to entertain people who come to visit. Having enough lighting is important as well as making sure that the lighting is comfortable and not too harsh or too dim.

An area rug may also be an important form of functionality. Many beautiful spaces have wooden floors and while these can look great, they can become especially cold in the winter months. An area rug can help to solve this problem because the area rug will provide some insulation against this chill, helping to keep the heat in the house and escaping through the floorboards.

When you are planning the layout of a room, always keep in mind that you will need to give the room the space to breathe. If everything is too cramped in the room, none of your guests will feel comfortable in it and they will stop spending time in your space. Giving everyone the feeling of being open, yet cozy, will work wonders, however, and make your room be the greatest destination for all future parties.

Interior Design Bathroom | Interior Design Color

November 20th, 2011

Your bathroom is a place for quiet solitude – your own personal spa, if you will, so you want it to have a comfortable interior design. Yet, remodeling or redecorating a bathroom that is small could be difficult. Thankfully, there are interesting options as there are many decorating philosophies now available for decorating small bathrooms.First, you must choose a design style that appeals to you but which will also add appeal to a tiny room. One big thing to avoid with small bathrooms is clutter since it is likely to make the room look a great deal smaller. The color palette is one more vital cosideration when enhancing your bathroom. You don’t have to just use white paint when making up for smallness in a room. You can toss out that boring white and apply a monochromatic palette, or use colors which have identical intensity without making the room appear cramped.

So you can try all cocoa’s, or bright colors in pink and orange. Painting an opposing wall a deep shade will make it look further away, thus adding depth. Pale colors will recede, therefore making the room feel larger and blue gray is a fine overall color for a small room. If gray isn’t your favorite color, you may also paint with cool colors such as greens and blues for the same feeling. When decorating small bathrooms you must also be aware of things like furniture placement. Even though lots of people brush off the qualities of Feng Shui, the principle behind it can still be used when arranging the furniture and accessories in your bathroom. Furniture should be positioned away from the doors to allow unhindered open access to the rooms in addition to making it appear more spacious. This serves to also highlight a bigger piece like a mirror or medicine cabinet. Use furniture sparingly and decorate with smaller pieces. Rather than having a hamper, try using a basket which will give the illusion of more space while still allowing towels and bath linens to be hidden away. You could also break up any monotony in the room design of your bathroom by mixing and matching small with large, so even though you might choose to try the small baskets, design in a large mirror, which not only gives a bit of appeal, but also provides the feeling that the room is larger than it actually is. If you focus on an explicit interior design style, then you can plan from the start on how to make best use of the bathrooms space. A sleek modern style can be ideal since this de-emphasizes clutter and tends to accentuate space. No matter what you decide on, don’t forget to be sure you can live with it, this is your room for personal care.If you are thinking of new ways for bathroom remodeling, how about installing bathroom paneling. Japanese Gardening

November 12th, 2011

The basics of a Japanese Garden

Most of us have a pre-determined notion of what a Japanese garden looks like. We think of certain details which come to mind, things like the ever popular Japanese maples giving off their fiery glow in the fall. Or expanses of Kurume azaleas or rhododendrons with their fine spring colors. Or perhaps it is the rustling of a slender bamboo in the breeze.

Whatever it is, there is always something soothing about the typical Japanese garden. But is there, in fact, such a thing as a typical Japanese garden?

There are different kinds of Japanese gardens, each having their very own personality, if you will.

Some of the best known gardens in Japan, have almost no plantings at all, but are comprised of carefully tended “seas” of fine gravel surrounding rock groupings. Perhaps there is no better example of this than the world renowned garden at Ryoan-ji.

Ryoan-ji is undoubtedly the finest example of a Zen type garden and receives tens of thousands of visitors every year.

In fact, it is so popular, that one side of it is lined with a large seating area to accommodate tour groups. It is considered de rigeur for all school children in the area to visit Ryoan-ji as part of their education.

While such a garden may appear to be very simple in both its’ design and construction, it is accepted that much thought went into this magical place to reach this level of perceived simplicity.

Japanese gardens span the full spectrum of garden types, from the dry garden as at Ryoan-ji, to large pond type gardens with their lazily swimming and brightly colored koi. And everything in between.

One of the favorite tricks of Japanese garden designers in the past has been to use borrowed scenery to enhance their appearance.

What this does, is to make the garden appear to blend in with, and take advantage of, the immediate surroundings. It gives the impression of much greater overall size.

Whether or not these surroundings are very close, or consist of distant mountain views, every effort is made to incorporate such views by carefully designing viewing areas to take full advantage of the natural surroundings.

Perhaps one of the most loved is the Japanese tea garden, with its’ own tea house. These gardens are usually quite small, and are sometimes included as a distinct part of a larger garden. The Nitobe Gardens in Vancouver are an example of such a tea garden. The garden itself is fairly large and contains most of the elements you would expect to find in an authentic garden of this type.

Should you find yourself interested in the fascinating subject of how to build your own Japanese style garden, an excellent place to begin is to study those gardens in existence already. Whether or not you have the ability to travel to Japan and visit some of these gardens first hand should not deter you. Fortunately for us, the internet has given us access to the best of the best.

Secondly, and by no means an inferior resource, their exists a wonderful variety of top notch books, almost all of which are available in the English language. Over the years I have been able to accumulate a substantial library by many of the finest authors on the subject.

Gardening – Organic Garden Soil

November 6th, 2011

Gardening with organic methods is a healthy way to grow crops and to be kind to the environment. Nature has it own way to keep soils rich in nutrients and to control diseases naturally. With a little planning and watching the way that nature works in your area, you can have the same eco-friendly results in your own gardens.

Testing your gardens soil is the first step in creating this natural environment. Once you know what you are working with you can either amend the soil organically or choose plants that will grow and thrive in the existing soil conditions you have.

When amending the soil with the uses of organic methods, you want to create an environment that is full of life. Living organisms, microorganisms, bacteria and fungi all are apart of this vast community that lives in a good healthy organic soil. All you have to do is to keep them feed and they will work for you in creating the quality of soil you want and need.

All this may seam complex, it is but isn’t that difficult to do. Once you get a system in place, it isn’t much work at all to maintain.

Having a healthy garden soil not only will have your plants thriving, it will also help grow healthy plants that will work on purifying the air we breath and the water we drink. It all works together and nature has the most economic way of doing it.

Go Green in your gardening practices and help the environment.

Home Decorating

November 1st, 2011

The art of decorating refers to the taking of a space, four walls and a roof. Decorating art also aims to make the room look better or fill the room with items and accessories. The purpose of decorating is to make the room more beautiful which can give your guest a good impression about its style and sophisticated look.

So this begs the question: since you are taking a space and doing things to make it look better than it actually is… is home decorating a form of lying?

In a crude sense all art is a lie. Every time we try to represent something which isn’t really there, we are creating an illusion. It is an act of deception, which is not necessarily antagonistic. Instead it is often meant to delight the senses with the intrinsic beauty that is called up by the successful application of this act.

If you say that decorating is a lie, then you should also count paintings, music, movies, and books all as mediums for liars. To some extent, this is a fair comparison. They are all dealing with alternate realities, things which do not exist, or which exist elsewhere, independent of the actual media being employed.

On the other hand however, the point of art is to create beauty. As such, isn’t art the truest thing possible? Beauty is something which touches all humans, regardless of location, culture, or upbringing. We may have differing opinions as to what specifically constitutes beauty, but we all understand its true nature deep within our conscious beings.

In this way, decorating is just a matter of taking concepts of beauty, a universal idea, and applying them to the world around us. This means it is not really a lie, but merely a revelation of the potential that exists within every space, every moment, every object in the world around us.
