Home Decor Trends: Eco-Decorating

February 28th, 2012

Antiques

Antique furnitures are among one of the absolute easiest ways to eco-decorate. Antique furnitures, whether it be a sofa or a dining table, is a piece that doesn’t require any additional manufacturing. The damage to the earth has been done, but by reusing the piece, you’ve created less of a need for newer manufactured pieces. Thus: you have eco-decorated in a big way.

Of course, this doesn’t just apply to furniture. Any antique items you use whether it be a set of antique dishes, a vase or an antique wall clock, are all considered eco-decorating. Furthermore, every antique piece you purchase means one less item in the landfills, which again, contributes in a huge way to the eco-friendly movement and the eco-decorating movement.

Reclaimed Materials

Reclaimed materials are another way that people are eco-decorating.

Recycled glass, old but reusable woods and metals can all be used to create various products: furnitures, lamps, picture frames, shaped oval mirrors and square mirrors, table decorations and wall art galore.

Much like with antiques, every item you purchase or make on your own that uses reclaimed materials ensures that those materials stay out of the landfill. For people in the eco-movement, that’s a huge deal.

Color Schemes for Eco-Decorating

Typically, people who are involved heavily in eco-decorating prefer natural and nature-based color schemes. This includes colors like beiges, browns and greens.

However, since eco-decorating is all about reducing, reusing and recycling, you can actually use any color scheme you desire as long as the products you use to create the color scheme are eco-friendly.

Keep in mind that eco-decorating doesn’t have to involve entirely eco-friendly, recycled or reused items. It’s okay to incorporate a few new pieces if you can’t find what you’re looking for in an environmentally friendly way. Trying to restrict yourself too much won’t make you happy and it may cause you to abandon the movement entirely, which is counterproductive! Always choose home accessories and decor that work for you, your family and your life.

Thank you for checking out my post, I hope this information helped! What do you think of the ideas? Comments are welcome!

Home Decor Secrets

February 23rd, 2012

Planning your home decor is not easy to do. There are so many different ways you need to look at your completed look before it is even complete. Visualizing your room is important and in order to do that you need to know some of the top home decor secrets.

Before you complete any room you need to look at the following different ways that you can complete your look.

Finding the right colors

Nobody said it would be easy but you do have to choose the right colors in order to balance your room and make everything blend together. Chances are you are going to use more than one color. Usually you will have a primary color and a neutral color to balance the look and allow it to blend. You cannot decorate a room without having some way of toning your main color. A neutral color will help to tone your colors down and help them to blend together.

Neutral colors consist of gray, beige, white, cream, and tan. There are several different ways to get these colors into your room to balance the decor.

Colors can affect the mood you have while you are in that room. If you want to be happy, you need to color the room yellow. If you want a calming atmosphere, you need to have lavender or sage.

Flooring

You can put color on your flooring in two different ways. The first way is place your main color on your floor using area rugs. You can place blue rugs or red rugs down for that. If you want your floors to accent your look in the room then you can use white rugs or brown rugs instead.

Walls

You can complete your wall decor by hanging pictures correctly on the wall. You need to find a way to center your focal point and learn to highlight the rest.

The way you hang your pictures can offset the entire room. Sometimes the more you use the more cluttered and small the room may feel. You may want to try a simple arrangement with one large artwork on the main wall and balance the rest of the walls with smaller artwork.

Lighting

It’s important that you have enough lighting in your room. To complete the look you need to add some table lamps to each side of the sofa. You need to be able to control the lighting and table lamps will give you that option.

Accessorize

No room is complete until you learn to accessorize the room. In order to do that you need to add floral arrangements, window treatments, and small items that have the colors that you are using in that room.

You want a room that welcomes your guests and calms you and your family when you are in it. You want a room that will be perfect for every day use. When the room is complete, you want to look around and see an expression of you.

Avoiding Home Decorating Disasters

February 18th, 2012

When your home decor is perfect, you create a beautiful haven that makes you want to rush home to relax and rejuvenate. When your home surroundings are at odds with your personality, however, it can create a virtual disaster, making you want to run away. There are a few items to consider when planning how to decorate your home.

When decorating your home, you may be used to one particular way to do things but maybe it is time to change that way so you can create a different look that you never thought about before.

Someone Else Chooses the Style

If you love the sophisticated style of Victorian furniture, but someone else chooses a more modern look, you will not be happy. If your favorite color is blue and the other person paints your walls orange, you will never be able to relax. The style in which you decorate your home is a very personal decision, and should reflect your unique taste and identity.

If someone wants to help with the decor, allow them to accessorize or accent your main look. There is balance even when more than one person is decorating.

Using the Wrong Color

Colors can either make or break a design scheme. You should choose your colors very carefully. For example, even if your favorite color is red, you may not want to paint an entire room with it. This is especially true in a small room. Red has a tendency to make people’s emotions run high, making it very hard for the mind to slow down and relax. Instead, it would be better to use bright colors such as red sparingly as accents.

Not paying attention to the floor

One of the most common mistakes in home decorating is to ignore the floor. You walk on it all the time but most people don’t realize the significance of the floor.

Use hardwood whenever possible. You can create a new look by changing area rugs in a room. Brighten the room with bright colors like yellow rugs or you can tone it down with a blue rug instead.

Not Considering the Purpose of the Room

When deciding how to arrange a room, functionality is just as important as its aesthetic characteristics. For example, a living room is meant to entertain and converse with guests. If you do not have the furniture set up in a matter conducive to these purposes, it will not be comfortable for you or your visitors.

If you are not sure what you want to do with a room, consider asking for help or allowing the other person in your home to decorate it anyway they want to. You may also want to consider searching online to find the right look for your home. Remember, just because you are using the room for one purpose now doesn’t mean it has to stay that way forever. Mix it up a little. Turn your den into an entertainment room or even another bedroom if you need it.

Decorating your home should take a lot of thought and consideration. With careful planning and following a few tips on what not to do, you will be able to avoid situations and create the environment, which will complement your style and spirit. Don’t keep your style and spirit hidden; show off your unique decorating style.
